There are quite a few bed and breakfast places within a couple of km of the Camino in northern Portugal. This seems to be a popular vacation area for Europeans. Casas do Rio is a bit over one km off the path but well worth the extra walk. I had learned about the property from a peregrino's blog and chose it as a good break point between Barcelos and Ponte de Lima. It was awesome!
After pulling a rope to ring the bell at the gate of Casas do Rio, we were greeted by the owners' children, Filipa and José. The owners were gone for the weekend, but their kids handled everything very well.
There are six rooms here in two buildings. Our room was a suite in the older building. One of the walls is more than 1000 years old. I slept in the big bed. Allie got the sofa bed.
Filipa arranged to have a local restaurant pick us up for dinner. We had met two Canadian sisters earlier. They also stayed at Casas do Rio and joined us for dinner. It turned out that we were the only people having an early dinner that Saturday evening. I had Bife na Pedra ("steak on stone"). Allie had Prego no prato ("nail on the plate").
The Casas do Rio family is very proud of their breakfast. We enjoyed it and made sandwiches to carry with us on Day 4.
I hope to stay here again!
