Day 6: São Roque to Tui

Some people chose to end this stage of the Camino in Valença, Portugal. Others choose Tui (Tuy in Galician) across the river in Spain. We chose Tui. The following day was going to be our longest one, so it seemed best to shorten it a bit.

Day 6 was to be our last day in Portugal. We would miss some things, but we wouldn't miss the cobblestones.

This day gave us a very interesting mix of surfaces and scenery as we approached the Valença/Tui border between Portugal and Spain. The weather had cooled again, and this day was fun.

We found the Germans again!

We walked through interesting rural roads before hitting the outskirts of Valença.

The Camino took us through the fortress at Valença and to the border of Portugal and Spain.

The Rio Minho/Miño separates Portugal and Spain. Welcome to España!

115km to go!

Tui is a popular place to start a Camino, as it is in Spain and qualifies for the minimum distance. Although the Camino never became crowded, we did notice that there were more and more peregrinos once we were in Spain.

Spain is one hour ahead of Portugal, but restaurants open later in Spain. We found our way to the Hotel Cólon, did our usual chores, then found a pizza place!

Our hotel was fine. Breakfast the next morning was nothing special. I would probably look at alternatives the next time.
